⚓ 6 things you need to succeed in ecommerce

Hi Reader,

If you have been curious about what you need to make strong retail sales online, read on—I’m going to explain the six things you need to have and the six things our work will do for you. If your business is doing well, but your brand or website is not in tiptop shape, hiring a designer is likely your best way to prepare for increased sales.

As part of our marketing and community-building efforts at Aeolidia, we teach and speak at conferences, trade shows, and other events. After meeting us, many shop owners are curious about what we do and how it serves them. Here’s a snippet of an email I received after one event:

I’m familiar with your beautiful work and I frequently dream about whipping my website into shape. But – to be totally honest – I’ve always been scared by the cost of building an efficient, functional, retail-driven website. Of course I know it’s worth it – I have no doubt about that. But I’m running a totally bootstrap business over here, and I’ve just never been able to come up with the money to put toward something like this.
It seems silly when I say that out loud, I totally know that this is a “spend money to make money” sort of thing… but it’s a reality.

This hard-working business owner can’t be the only person wondering what to invest in and when, specifically when to invest in a custom website, so I wanted to share some more info on that topic.

FAQ

Q: Our website is working fine, I guess. How do I know when it’s time to redesign?

A: If your website wasn’t designed specifically to differentiate your business and tell your story in an engaging way, our work should have a significant impact.

If you don’t feel proud to show your website to customers, wholesalers, press, investors, etc. that means your site is falling short, and it’s time for a redesign.

Pair that with a lower-than-average conversion rate, or a shopping experience that’s anything less than enjoyable, and it’s definitely time for a change.

Custom Shopify site and ongoing optimization for Sugar Paper.

The challenge:

Sugar Paper is a stationery shop, making beautiful things for thoughtful people. They had two locations in Los Angeles, but their website had never quite been treated like the flagship store of their online presence. It was time to change that. They wanted to embrace UI, rethink the navigation, recognize loyalty, and make shopping joyful.

“We were so moved by how cohesive the site looks that we have decided to consider it a third store that will be ‘turned’ as well. You have put so many lovely elements in it that we realized pretty quickly that we couldn’t look at it as just a sales site, it is a store and it needs to nurtured and maintained as one. So now, as we move forward with marketing, we will be considering that and keeping that in mind to bring the best we can with content and design to this lovely little spot on the internet.” —Chelsea Shukov, Sugar Paper
