⚓️ Finding growth and support in mastermind groups

Hi, I'm Arianne, founder of Aeolidia. We create effective Shopify sites and email marketing for thoughtful, independent brands. Our newsletter shares advanced, need-to-know ecommerce strategies. Not on the list yet? Join here.

Hi Reader,

You don’t have to be a lone wolf if you run a business. In fact, creating your own wolf pack can make everything better.

Though I started my business alone, one year in Las Vegas I found myself pouring out all my worries about an employee problem to six friends who I'd met via Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses.

Instead of guessing at what to do, I got to hear their stories and advice, and make an informed decision.

Over drinks and fries in Vegas, the people in my 10KSB group helped me fire an employee. (I'm also confident that they would rescue me from a burning building.)

One thing I have stuck with over the last decade of growing my business is participating in peer groups to learn, share and get general support.

I have brought problems to my groups that range from employee issues to project scheduling. I have offered my thoughts on content marketing and sticking to deadlines.

This has been great for Aeolidia, and I have also made some real friendships with people I relate to. (In addition to the business talk, I have also laughed my booty off, cried a bit and vented.)

In my latest article for UPPERCASE magazine (the best magazine! I highly recommend subscribing), I wrote about my experiences of finding growth and support in mastermind groups. I also shared some tips on how to get started, including the types of people to include (or not include) in your group, and how we use an accountability document in one of my groups to get the most out of our time together.

Have you found similar support from your fellow business owners via mastermind groups? Do you have any tips for what's worked (or hasn't) for your group? Please let me know, I'd love to hear!

P.S. Our webinar today where we showed how working on three vital parts of your ecommerce strategy pays off? It went so well! Packed with good info, and people got emotional! I can't wait to show it to you. I'll share the replay as soon as we have it, and thanks to the big group of you that showed up live! It's SO enjoyable getting to work with such talented, curious, and generous individuals every day (my fellow presenters and you all!).

Here is how excited we felt during and after this webinar (this is our ads partner Jess celebrating what the three of us did for High Tail Hikes).

Q&A

Here's a reader question about free shipping, from Kyle, as answered by Helen Hulskamp, Director of Ecommerce on our team:

Q: We offer free shipping on orders over $100. Would value your insight/strategy on that threshold.  Should it be higher, lower?

A: Since your Average Order Value (AOV) has been about $102 for the last year, if the goal is to boost AOV further, then we recommend going to $125. The rule of thumb is 25% higher than your current AOV so it nudges it higher without being too out of reach. But it is also important to look at top competitors and make sure your policy is in line with what your customers expect.

  • I liked this article: Failing Is Common, Trying Is Rare. I know I let myself off the hook sometimes when I could keep pushing through. Someone asked me on a webinar for an "easy" way to grow her business. Maybe just try! But, like, really try.
  • Klaviyo is opening its platform to AI tools. You'll soon be able to access much of what's in your Klaviyo admin from your AI tool of choice, such as asking questions about your data instead of digging through reports.
  • Kurt Vonnegut's 8 tenets of storytelling are for telling literal stories, but every one of them applies to marketing as well (sorry, Mr. Vonnegut!). The ones about "characters" apply to you, your business, or your customer. "Write to please just one person" is my favorite.

Latest Aeolidia Launch

A new Press & Trade page for Detroit Malletworks.

"Now that everything's live and squared away, I wanted to take a moment to genuinely thank you and the whole team at Aeolidia. This project had a lot of moving parts, and I know I threw a fair number of last-minute changes and detailed requests your way — thank you for handling every one of them with patience and good humor.

The Press & Trade page turned out beautifully, and I'm proud to have something this polished representing Detroit Malletworks to press and trade buyers. Please pass along my thanks to the developer and to Sam as well — I know a lot of hands touched this to get it right.

I'll be recommending Aeolidia to anyone I know who needs this kind of work done well. Thank you for everything!"

P.S. This is the kind of project we can do on retainer with you!
