Today! Online Shop Do's & Don'ts: Live website critiques

Hi Reader,

I talk a lot about how my team can improve your website to make you more money. One thing I don't mention as often: one of our favorite things to do is to save you time. Money comes and goes, but time you can never get back. Also, time is money. And all those other cheesy sayings about time.

We've had a little flurry of people telling us how thrilled they are about how much time and hassle we've saved them lately. I wanted to share a few of these.

Artist selling framed prints

The site shows the art in the selected frame, with a visual mockup. This artist came to us with 40 new pieces of art to launch, freaking out a bit. Because launching new art or fixing one frame color meant making hundreds of new mockups by hand (!!! this is how her original developer built it). She told us it would save her a ton of time if we could solve this seemingly impossible problem.

Iran, our Senior Web Developer, rebuilt her frame mock-up so all frame art lives in one Shopify metaobject, and built an automated workflow that takes a Dropbox URL pasted into a product field and turns it into the product’s main image (optimized for speed). Yes, I know that was a bunch of developer gobbledygook. That's why you hire us instead of trying to figure it out yourself or argue with a chatbot about it!

What it means is she doesn't have to create product photos (her art mocked up in frames) for her website anymore. It's all automatic. We showed her the fix (all in her Shopify admin), and she replied with:

Personalized labels

This designer sells personalized name labels. Customers are always trying to sneak emojis in, but she can't print those for them, so it turns into a lot of customer service emails.

Iran added a check to the personalization fields. If a customer types an emoji, clicking Add to Cart shows a message saying emojis aren’t supported. Before that, she had to email those customers herself after they ordered. Here was her response to our fix:

Migration for a housewares brand

After launch, Helen ran a broken-link report for this brand, showing which page each broken link was on and where it pointed. The shop owner had been meaning to hunt them down himself, and was able to fix them all from the list, saving tons of time.

I am very proud of my team! They're all much better than I ever was at everything we do.

We solve complicated problems and get rid of Shopify hassles all the time. Just recently, we've created these solutions to unique problems:

  • a zip code checker that immediately alerts shoppers if they aren't in the delivery zone
  • a special "pattern" field, so junk vendor pages stop showing up in Google
  • diagnosing a sudden conversion dip as bot traffic (and we're always helping people fight bots)
  • a custom shoppable video section built to replace a pricey monthly app
  • Issuu book previews that automatically resize instead of having to be adjusted one by one
  • preorders tagged automatically and gathered into one saved order view
  • wholesale orders tagged by shop name, so finding a retailer’s history takes one search

So what's driving you crazy in your Shopify admin? It's likely the kind of thing we can solve for you. We would love to help! Please note that if you decide to hire us, we would fix all your Shopify woes as part of a strategic retainer (not a small task - we just aren't set up for that).

See what the investment in our retainer work is by requesting our rate sheet (see retainer pricing under the "Shopify Website Design & Development" heading).

Then email me back to tell me the pain points you'd like us to make go away. We'll have you all fixed up for 2027!

A Shopify redesign for PINCH.

Owner Jena was looking to grow her online sales, but had outgrown her website. For PINCH's redesign, we started with a Brand Design Day, led by Beckie, to set the visual direction. She then carried that branding into a brand new Simple Shopify site design. Nick built the technical details and extra functionality, and Natalia on our team wrote the copy. GORGEOUS! I want to buy everything on the site now that it's showcased so well, and so easy to find.
