Here's a reader question about ecommerce growth metrics, from Jane, as answered by Helen Hulskamp, Ecommerce Strategist on our team: Q: What metrics do you think matter most when measuring whether an ecommerce business is growing year after year? |
A: When you’re measuring ecommerce growth, sales aren’t the only thing to watch. You will also want to measure Sessions & Visitors, Conversion Rate, Average Order Value, Revenue per User, and Returning Customer Rate (how often customers come back).
If you run ads, you will measure Customer Acquisition Cost, which is the cost of acquiring a new customer. And while Customer Lifetime Value is great to know, it’s a more advanced number that usually needs special tools.
The really valuable insight comes from breaking your numbers down by traffic source, device type, campaign, or whether shoppers are new or returning. For example, you might see a solid 2.5% conversion rate overall, but a closer look shows desktop at 4.5% and mobile only at 0.5%, pinpointing where you have the greatest opportunity for growth.

The Letter Nest is the work of talented artist, Sally King McBride, who transforms her whimsical illustrations into alphabet prints, personalized name art, stationery, and more. Each piece begins with her own hand-drawn designs and carries her signature style.
We updated The Letter Nest with a fresh, beautifully functional Shopify site, complete with a refined color and font system, improved shopping features, and a welcoming homepage. The goal was to make the shop as polished and inviting as the artwork it showcases.
